A session with Dr. Jay Mehta on Poe's Short stories

Hello readers, this Blog is about the guest lectures in which as always our professor Dr.Dilip Barad sir keep on inviting many scholars of different fields. So, we have 18th to 22nd September 2018, lectures on Poe's short story by Dr. Jay Mehta former student of The Dept. Of English MKBU.

  • My learning Experience:- No doubt, Jay Mehta sir has mastery in teaching Edgar Allan Poe's short story because he done his PhD in Poe short stories. So, we can say that he has good knowledge about Poe and his stories. A day before session, he gave us very interesting task based on our real life and related to Poe's characteristic of Poe's story like you ever got anger or feel murderer? Do you believe in Ghost or not so on. To read pre-thinking task click here

He has sessions on the following stories but unfortunately I attended only one short stories due to some reason.

1) The Tell Tale Heart
2) The Black Cat
3) The Fall of the House of Usher
4) The Cask of Amontillado
5) The Purloined Letter
6) The Gold Bug

I have studied one story is "The Tell Tale heart" in which jay Mehta sir started story from audio clip. It was very good selection because the tone of the voice was fully appropriate to the words of the story in which we can feel the terror and horror kind of feelings. The teaching style was very interesting because we couldn't feel boredom because sir had various examples and approaches to teach this story. I liked the teaching method of Jay sir because he was explaining the story with psychoanalytical perspective and reality based examples. So, it was very interesting session with sir but rest of the short stories I was unable to attend but here is my classmate Reena's Blog about other sessions on the stories and it is very well drafted reviews of her learning: To read review of all the sessions click here

As we all know that Shashi Tharoor is well known writer and Minister in Indian national Congress. Recently, he published his book "An Era of Darkness" in which he talked about what British did in India. His all speeches about British Raj are worth listening because we can get the idea about his wide knowledge about British Raj in India.

Here, I have tried to put best ideas from the videos through images.

1) Indian GDP before British and After British:-

2) How British brought poverty and literacy rate in India:-  Here, Tharoor talked about the poverty of India. When British left India that time ninety percent of the population was living below the poverty line.

3) What British did in India, Tharoor talked about how British looted Indian raw material and threw India into ashes and then India raised itself after independence. Here, British journalist also talked about Brexite and she don't know about his ancestor's cruelty.

4) Taxation on resources:-  There were many highest taxes on resources in India like salt tax, land taxes, passenger rate for train and many more because of GDP was very law and that is why British started to take higher taxes from Indian.

5) Winston Churchill and Bengal famine:- Here, Shashi Tharoor revealed the cruelty of Churchill. when he was in power that time 10 million bengoli died of starvation for British profit and then Churchill said that why has not Gandhi died yet.  Introduction:
The field of Postcolonial Studies is one of the academic discipline that has arisen in an attempt to amend or replace radical theories of social power since the alleged discrediting of Marxism. Together with intellectual constructions like feminism, queer theory and other manifestations of postmodernism, it has won the attention of many academics who despair of grand narratives, logo centrism, historicism and progressive teleology.
Possessed by pessimism and often babbling in tongues, these intellectuals "theorize" the agonies of the dispossessed while serving on tenure committees.  The use of cognate terms "Commonwealth" and "Third World" that were used to describe the literature of Europe's former colonies has become rarer. Although there is considerable debate over the precise parameters of the field and the definition of the term "postcolonial," in a very general sense.

Allegory:

Allegory literary term and allegory is actually, the use of characters events or ideas in the novel literary. Text that are used to illustrate or show the larger concept. Something that is not directly said but it's implied rather this larger concept, that just relate to a number of different things for instance this larger concepts pointing.
To something political or it could be something religious, it could be historical or social either way whatever the larger concept is directly pertaining to the whole point of the allegory. is that the author is using the text to provide his or her own commentary, on the subject matter in other word the author is investing and putting their own opinion into literary text . Or can be identify this allegory is almost like hidden message it's the authors on hidden message that they want to get across in the novel .

The word allegory has been derived from the “Greek” word allegoric, meaning to speak in other terms. This means speaking otherwise translation. In allegory    is almost about double meaning. The representation of abstract principle by characters or figure a picture book or other form of communication. Using such representation symbolic representation, which can be interpreted to revise a hidden meaning usually or more or political one.

Allegory is an extended narrative where more is mint than meets the eye or the year for example which carries a second winning along with its surface story.

Allegory has long been a prominent feature of literary and mythic writing throughout the world, but it becomes particularly significant for post-colonial.  Writers for the way in which it disrupts notions of orthodox history, classical realism and imperial representation in general.

Allegory has assumed an important function in imperial discourse, in which paintings and statues have often been created as allegories of imperial power. Consequently, one form of post-colonial response to this has been to appropriate allegory and use it to respond to the allegorical representation of imperial dominance.

Third World literatures, indeed all Third World cultural constructions, are ‘necessarily’ national allegories. This means, firstly, that post-colonial cultures may use allegory to ‘read’ the text of colonialism So much of the life of the colonized subject has been constructed by, that is, metaphorically. the use of the allegorical form seeks to replace monolithic traditions with a cross-cultural pluralism.
‘post-colonial’ allegory contests and disrupts the narrative assumptions of colonialism, such as the inevitability of ‘development’, of ‘progress’, of ‘civilization’, the dominance of the chronological view of history, the Euro-centric view of ‘the real’. By reinforcing the fact that ‘real’ events occupy various horizons of meaning, post-colonial allegory becomes a common strategy of resistance in post-colonial texts.

What is post colonialism?
Literature written after the colonizing countries left the colonization of the countries, which were ruling the countries. In Asia and Africa when they left when they granted freedom, to those countries. Who went away to their own land and the people, of the colonized countries they started writing in the same language.
For example, English why did they learn English? And write in English or French why?
So, language and culture is newer to a foreign culture to of foreign language. Like Indian English and if they learn English they would Rise Above their one people.  so he introduced and this people British, has changed the complete education system and when the Britishers  life.
The country, so there was a change in writing people who were purely of one country,  one language, they were introduced but different language different culture so what happened there was a culture shock in with there was a language shock in the beginning. And then they expressive their children day web on in environment. Which was having intermixing of both the culture and language. And that's how hybrid, hybridization the mixing, with two culture took place and a new short of writing.
Image and the critic they called postcolonial writing. Post colonialism it image in India it imagine Africa and all of the countries where the colonizing countries had stayed for more than century. .

Anti colonialism:
The political struggle of colonized peoples against the specific ideology and practice of colonialism Anti-signifies the point at which the various forms of opposition become articulated as a resistance to the operations of colonialism in political, economic and cultural institutions. It emphasizes the need to reject colonial power and restore local control.

Paradoxically, anti-colonialist movements often expressed themselves in the appropriation and subversion of forms borrowed from the institutions of the colonizer and turned back on them.

Thus the struggle was often articulated in terms of a discourse of anti-colonial ‘nationalism’ in which the form of the modern European nation-state was taken over and employed as a sign of resistance Anti-colonialism has taken many forms in different colonial situations; it is sometimes associated with an ideology of racial liberation, as in the case of nineteenth-century West African nationalists such as Edward Wilmot In the second half of the twentieth century.

Anti-colonialism was often articulated in terms of a radical, Marxist discourse of liberation, and in constructions that sought to reconcile the internationalist and anti-elitist demands of Marxism with the nationalist sentiments of the period (National Liberation Fronts), in the work and theory of early national liberationist thinkers.
Anti colonialism the movement that oppose colonialism. Anti colonial struggle the opinion war through film more lasted from 1839 to 1842 It begin because the British kept trafficking opium through India into the China. China in British were doing this because they really wanted to trade Chinese birth cake new opium was only product that China could not produce for itself,  so the British wanted to trade with China. China  site no we already have everything we need and then the British said oh wait but we have got this opinion in China said we don't really want either but the British food traffic it through India and then into China and threaded there even through .

Apartheid:
It was a system of racial segregation that governed South Africa for nearly 50 yearsSeparators it was a system of racial segregation that governed South Africa.  It specifically aimed to protect the domination of the white South Africans over non whites in every aspect of life but it didn't just appear out of thin air during the colonial grab for the country.

Between the Dutch descended African and the British the rights of native black South Africans, where Show episode was officially made low in 1948 by the African lead national party.  it was the contribution of in justice already happening African , believe that South Africa was there god.

Given Homeland and that the white race was superior the black majority was therefore seen as a threat there were  loss blacks had to carry it permits at all times in head office trick .

When did people were classified into four wrestle, categories white black Indian. And colored people, of mixers race and they where old separated into different residential areas blacks were divided into so call Homeland based on tribal group. Rural overcrowded and lack jobs forcing black to seek work as migrate labor.
Wage Vellore and it was illegal for workers to strict see appetite was also economically, motivated cheap workforce was needed particular to work in the countries.  Goldmines powerful Mini magnet had a huge stake in apartheid, policies since there profit depend on keeping black wag.

Law outside their designed home.  And non white had no political rights since they were not technically citizen.  They cannot education also divided bus stand setup separate education system, for black that receive fraction of funding that white schools.  Did mandatory education and died.

At the age 13 funnel blacks in into menial migrate labor exploitation by design needleless.  To say there was resistance to this instance law protects, where of fun lead black students and youth where met with several preparation out of this struggle.

Conclusion:
A theory of the operation of the world economic, social and political system, formulated by Immanuel Wallerstein .The chief assertion of this theory is that the capitalist system has been the world economic system since the sixteenth century and that one cannot talk about economies in terms of the nation-state, nor of ‘society’ in the abstract, nor of ‘stages’ of progress, because each society is affected by, indeed is a part of, the capitalist world profits.

·         Introduction

Teacher and student both are two sides of one coin. Teacher cannot teach without learner and learner cannot learn without teacher. They both are nation's builder. So, both are very important in teaching learning process.

What should be the role of Teacher?

The post of the teacher is the best post in the world because he is the maker of new nation, he is lives changer, he cultivates us from the animal to the human-being, he has power to build or to destroy. There are many features, as a teacher one should cultivate. Here I take the examples of my teacher Dr. Dilip Barad head of the Department of English MK Bhavnagar University in below points.

1) Friend, Philosopher and Guide:

A teacher should have friendly nature with the students, he should be the philosopher as well as guide. My teacher has very friendly nature with all the students, everyone can share s/he ideas with the teacher. And also he is very good philosopher, thinker and intellect. He used to give thinking activity to all students to make students rational thinker. Teacher also should provide proper guidance to the students and my sir also very good guide for us because he inspires us to take part in any kind of events and also provide what students want from him.

2) Professional preparedness:

Teacher should be the master and has power in his subjects matter. If teacher is specialist in his subject and confidence then he can provides proper information to the students. Because the teacher has to lay the foundation of a student's life and he has to increase the curiosity in the students. Teacher should remove the confusion from the mind of pupils and provide fact answer to the students. Hence, teacher must loyal to his profession.

3) Good in Subject presentation:

Teacher should be like a salesman who sell knowledge in a wonderful way.Teacher must use various teaching learning material like my teacher who teach with technology and my another teacher teach us with various game, with experiments, with demonstration, etc. So, students' interest will increase towards study. Chalk and talk sometime bore students so teacher should use various method and techniques in teaching style.

4) Teacher as facilitator and co-learner:

In the era of information and technology, students already have Smartphone and internet so they have every kind of information. Now they do not come with empty mind they have all kind of information about their subject so here teacher have to perform the role of facilitator and make the a beautiful classroom atmosphere in which students can learn themselves. So, teacher should used project method, debate, group work etc.

5) Teacher as Classroom manager:

As a teacher if you want to make interesting atmosphere of classroom you have to ponder following points:

·                     Always start positively
·                     Know where are starting from
·                     Know where are you going
·                     Know what resources you will need
·                      have a backup material or activities in hand
·                     Involved all the students in activities
·                     What to teach, why to teach and how to teach

What is the role of Student?

The role of student is very crucial along with teacher's role. Without teacher, the teacher learning process is impossible. Our Educational text also students center, teaching learning is happening for the sake of student, student is a central aspect of teaching learning. So, according to me the role of students is as following:

1) Curious:

Students should be curious to learn and gain knowledge, they should ask questions to remove confusion to understand the subject matter. Curiousness lead students towards brightness and always ready to learn new thing from teacher.

2) Active:

Student must active in every kind of activity whether outside of class or in the classroom. When teacher arrange any of activity students should be a part of such activity so it make you learner active and perfect.

3) Punctual:

Students must be punctual in school time or in given tasks by teacher. Punctuality makes students honest and it is good sign for students. Punctual students always loved by teacher and also a very good habit.

4) Self-disciplined:

Disciplined students loved by everyone. Discipline means not that kind of in which teacher punished students to be disciplined but disciplined should be come from self realizing. Many Educational thinkers emphasis on self discipline.

5) Leader:

Students also have to possess the skill of leadership because they will go to lead nation in future. So, leadership is good virtue to be cultivated. Leadership is very important for societal functioning so students must acquire this kind of habit at school level.

6) Extrovert:

Every student has different kind of personalities, some are introvert and some are extrovert. But as per my thinking, students should be an extrovert, because extrovert students fit themselves in every kind of situation and also loved by everyone. I'm not saying that introvert personality is bad, somewhat it is very good but introvert students do not make relationship with other, whereas extrovert students’ work in group and group work is very important for gregariousness.

·         Teacher shouldn’t  be:-

Yelling – No students like yelling at them. This will cause them to slowly dislike the teacher and may result in distrust too. Also by yelling, you can never follow the classroom management plan. Students will more listen to you, when you speak in a normal voice. While raising your voice, it seems like you are showering your frustrations in front of them. Clear communication will make teaching an easier and enjoyable task as well.

Short temper – It is just not fine if the role model lose temper in front of the students. Especially if you are an Early Years Foundation Stage teacher. Rebuilding trusts and relationship with students is not that easier as it seems to be. Try to keep calm and take effort as to avoid shouting. In case if you have raised your voice, make sure to apologize. Also focus on your behavioral aspects and change the things that need to be done.

Unprepared for class – Coming unprepared for class is the loss of valuable teaching time. It also indicates a negative behavior.

Loss of control – Never let the class become unruly. Take control of the class. Students may become overexcited and may create noises. Early Years Foundation Stage teachers might find it difficult, but it is a skill that can easily be developed. An ideal way would be to create signals such as clapping hands or raising hands to keep them quiet.

Continuous sitting – Teachers sitting at the beginning of the class is fine. But remaining in the seated position throughout the class may create lack of interest and motivation in students.

Arguing – Discussions and argument are both different. Even if the student argues on any point, you should never encourage that. While setting rules in the beginning of the year, make sure to include that arguing is not an appreciable behavior and it shows disrespect.

Humiliation – Never hurt the dignity and self-respect of a student. He/she will lose confidence in your classroom. Also they will never trust you.

Getting too much friendly – Most new teachers make this mistake. They try to win the students by compromising on discipline, which may result in disrespect. Make sure to follow the set of rules that teaches them discipline. Also never be too open with students to discuss your personal information. Instead stay professional and try to earn their respect and appreciation.

Late rules – Establishing rules in the beginning of the year helps to create a peaceful atmosphere during the whole year. Routines and rules, established late will fail to serve the purpose.

Complaining about coworker – Talking ill about other staff, management or other teachers in the school will be of no gain at all. It is better to talk directly to the teacher or staff member whom you have issues with and solve the problem then and there.

Too tough and authoritative – A teacher’s authority is a responsibility. Never misuse that. Being too tough and hard may result in students being afraid of you. Your aim should be to be loved, respected and not to be feared by them.

Over dependency on administrators – Make your own strategies to manage the class. Never depend too much on school administrators. A teacher also plays the role of an educator and disciplinarian.

Unequal treating – Never treat students based on your likes and dislikes. All the students should be considered equal. Punishment should be same for everyone and never show special consideration for the one you like the most.

Getting late – Punctuality is crucial as students learn many things from you. Getting late occasionally is fine. When you get late, make sure to say a sorry to your students.
Lessons from text book alone – Just teaching the students what is dictated in the text causes boredom. Also they will miss many things like experimenting what they learned, projects and assignments.

·         Conclusion:-
To wind up, in this way teacher’s and students’ follow these types of behavior. Both are very crucial in teaching learning process. If teachers and students follow each other then classroom atmosphere is very cool to learning and teaching.
